PHCP Board Meeting

The Provincial Historic Commemorations Board met on March 2nd to review nominations submitted for commemoration. They will recommend several new commemorations which will be announced in October of 2012.

During this meeting the Board also began the review process of all nominations that were received by the February 15th deadline.

If you are thinking of making a nomination you can contact the program administrator for advice and guidance during the submission process. Our next deadline for submissions is June 15th, 2012

Board meeting in October

Submitted a nomination in June? By now you should have received notification of receipt and been advised that the Board will review it at their next meeting in October. The next nomination deadline is February 15, 2012, but you can send nominations in anytime before this date.

Next Nomination Deadline Approaching

Get your nominations in! If you think a person, event, place or tradition is significant in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador, why not let us know by submitting a nomination by June 15. We're piloting a new nomination form that we'd love feedback on. Email the program administrator, Kate Wolforth at katewolforth@gov.nl.ca for more information.

New Designations Announced!

Minister Terry French announced six new designations under the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program today at the Rooms in St. John's.

New designations under the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program will be announced on June 8, 2011 at The Rooms, St. John's.

PHCP Meeting

The PHCP Board met on February 22nd to review nominations submitted by the February 15th deadline. As a result of their deliberations, they will recommend several new commemorations. Wondering what they are? All will be revealed at a ceremony in October 2011.

Do you have something or someone you'd like to nominate for provincial recognition? The next submission deadline is June 15th, 2011. Before making your nomination, it's a good idea to contact Kate Wolforth, the program administrator, for any guidance in following the submission process.

New designations

On October 5, 2010, Minister Terry French announced three new designations under the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program:

  • "The Founding of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary" as an event of provincial significance
  • "The Tsunami of 1929" as an event of provincial significance
  • "Rescue at Sea and the Heroism associated with such Events" as a distinctive cultural tradition or practice. The Harvey Family of Isle aux Morts, Captain William Jackman of Renews-Cappahayden, and the rescues made following the wrecks of the USS Pollux and USS Truxtun near St. Lawrence were commemorated as representative of this category.
