Outstanding Historic Events

Nominated subjects in this category include:

  • an action that occurred at a specific time and place (at least 40 years before its nomination) that influenced the subsequent history of the province
  • a happening that expresses the province's culture, tradition, or heritage

An event can be regional in nature as long as it is representative of a broader provincial theme (examples would be the Labrador fishery, or the Grand Bank fishery). Natural disasters will also be considered under this category if a submission demonstrates that the event had a long-term impact on Newfoundland and Labrador's history and/or culture.
