How much time do you have?

1/2 hour: If you're already downtown, walk to the Newman Wine Vaults and take the tour.

3-4 hours (walking): Take the tour at the wine vaults, then walk up historic Water Street - look for the merchant buildings of St. John's past - including the restored Murrary Premises (now shops). Walk down to the harbour and imagine it filled with sails, and with barrels and barrels of shipments stacked on wharves and finger piers. Continue on to Commissariat House Provincial Historic Site to see how the merchants of St. John's reacted when England imposed a tax on imports to Newfoundland in 1829.
