Ongoing Experiences

Included with price of admission.

May 20, 2017

  • Guided Tour - Enjoy a guided tour of one of the oldest buildings in St. John's with one of our knowledgeable interpreters. The Commissariat was built between 1818-1820 as the home and offices of the Assistant Commissary General - the supply officer for British forces in Newfoundland. Learn more about the British military presence in Newfoundland.
  • Impress with a Quill Pen - Can you write with a feather? The Officers of the Commissary could. Until the mid to late nineteenth century, most writing was done this way. Have a seat in the general office in Commissariat House and try it for yourself. Dip your feather in the ink to write your name or draw a picture. If you're feeling adventurous, try writing a letter then sealing it with wax.
  • Life in the 1830s - Commissariat House offers a series of engaging activities for kids and adults alike. See if anything is cooking in our historic kitchen or help out in the historic vegetable garden. Curl up in the sunroom to explore toys and games from the past like dominos. And don't forget to take a selfie dressed in the fashion of the period and share with us on social media.
  • Crafts in the Carriage House - Drop by the Carriage House and get creative! Create a shadow puppet and put off a show. Or make a mobile using a variety of materials. Or maybe create your own letter seal! See what we're making today!

Concert by Candlelight

Brianna Gosse with Steve Maloney – August 24, 2017

August 24, 2017

Since the release of her multiple award winning debut recording, AERA, with its pop and soul vibe, Newfoundland native Brianna Gosse has been steadily turning hearts and ears with her charm, musicality and incredible voice. Whether performing with a full band, or simply as solo guitar and ukulele, her songs breathe a resonance that has graced airwaves, stages and events from St. John's to Kansas City and steadily making fans at all stops in between!

Steve Maloney is a Newfoundland born and trained vocalist and songwriter. After a release in March of 2014 with his group Steve Maloney and the Wandering Kind he has been touring eastern Canada extensively, with festival stops at Halifax Pop Explosion, the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, In the Dead of Winter, Wreck House Jazz and Blues Festival, Lawnya Vawnya, Sound of Music Festival, Writer's at Woody Point, Harbourage, and many more. The release also saw Steve and the group on an exchange in Barbados with Flow and Aliant networks. This attention caught the ear of the east coast's music community, with a short-list nomination for the Borealis Music Prize, and two ECMA nominations. Maloney and co. were also nominated for five MusicNL awards in 2014, taking home the Rising Star of the Year. With slots opening for well respected acts like; Wintersleep, Bahamas, Hawksley Workman, By Divine Right, Amelia Curran, Hey Rosetta!, The Wooden Sky, Joel Plaskett, Basia Bulat and more, Steve Maloney has been earning a reputation as a musical chameleon with a velvet voice. Skating around the genres of folk, classical and contemporary pop music, Maloney's voice brings a call from the past, with a rich and soulful delivery that denies easy classification.
