Colonial Building

Military Road, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Imagine... elaborate ceilings painted by a convicted Polish forger, the place where Joey Smallwood argued that the independent nation of Newfoundland should join Canada...

From 1850 to 1959, the Colonial Building was witness to Newfoundland's unique political story - from colony to nationhood, from nationhood to the suspension of democracy during the Commission of Government years, and onwards to provincial status within Canada. A new experience of the Colonial Building will bring to life the people and political events that still resonate in Newfoundland and Labrador today.
